Babys Name
Choosing a baby name is one of the most loved and feared stages of raising a child. Many parents are confused as to how to go about choosing a name that will hold throughout a little one’s life.
Although there are literally millions of baby names, the majority of boys have their first name as Thomas, William or John and among girls there are more named Mary, Elizabeth or Anne than any other.
If you don’t want your baby to have a common name, here are a few tips to help you go about choosing the right name.
Step one: write down the attributes and qualities you like in a person. Take your cue from the names of different things, including flowers, places, famous people, relatives, or something that holds meaning for you. List the names you like. If you choose to name your child after a famous person, ensure you tell your child as they grow up. Another special way to go about it is to name a child after a family member, as a way of honouring that loved one.
Step two: play with the combinations of the name and see how it sounds. It should be pleasant to the ears and carry positive connotations. You should never feel uncomfortable when hearing your baby names. If you do, strike them from the list.
Step three: keep in mind with boy’s names that a single syllable gives a more masculine sound. Names like John, Carl, jack and Ron. For a female sounding name, go for a single syllable and soft vowel sound like May, Joan or Jane.
Step four: a general guide is to give a short first name if your surname is long. If you want a unique name, try spelling the name differently to make it unique, such as Stefanie, Jenifer and Loren.
Step five: consider whether you have a common surname, and whether your child would be better off with a more unusual first name to make their name more distinctive. Rather than Mary Smith, consider Lucinda or Eloise.
